Four Days Until New Year’s Eve

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 27

Cam

Cam hangs out on the couch, blankets piled on him like a warm version of the rumored snow that the weather forecasters keep saying will happen this week. The morning darkness wraps around him; he woke up at 4 A.M., unable to get back to sleep.

The mini Christmas tree lights flicker merrily. Even though Christmas was two days ago, most people in Japan seem to keep their lights up to celebrate the new year. It’s kind of nice, and he likes the way Remy gets a dreamy-eyed look whenever she sees a bunch of them.

A noise makes him look up; a quick glance at the wall clock shows it’s barely 5 A.M. He sits up; a figure is slipping out of the second bedroom to the front door.

“Remy?” he whispers. Uncle David and Aunt Kiyoko are still asleep.

She spins around. “Shoot. I didn’t mean to wake you.” She gestures at her peacoat. “I was just going out for a bit since the jet lag is still waking me early.…”

“Can I go with you?” he asks. “Maybe we can recover another memory.”

Her eyes sparkle. “Get dressed in five? We can get an early breakfast with more sugar than the brownies.”

“I’ll be ready in two.”

Yesterday, they were only able to recreate tiny memories: sipping on 3D latte art from a café called HATCOFFEE reminded Cam of the spring break they spent experimenting with latte art with Remy at her parents’ tea shop; seeing a Shiba Inu dance around their owner reminded him of playing fetch with Mochi, Remy’s dog. Little yet precious moments of their friendship, but nothing that’s melted more than a millimeter. He could use whatever help he can get from Remy.
